I really liked the story, but I adored the scenery. It was just awesome !The story is also really nice, with a modern touch by Bo and Zac who earn a living by being influencers. I liked it, because it is everywhere now, and as nice as it may seen: you are every so often missing the point of being in a moment, and not being in a shot. I also liked the two stories which are enwined in one another.There is only one thing: The story was in some parts a little predictable... But that is just a really tiny point. If you know those stories, you just know those stories ! ^^All in all, a great christmas read, that sets the mood.
This author wrote a book on what has been fascinating me most about social media and in particular Instagram. My fascination has to do with how people believe what they see on Instagram and how reality is probably (and often is) very different from a few pictures show. Anyway, the story starts with a successful Instagram couple sitting in Samoa planning their next adventure in Norway. They have paired with a Norwegian clothing company and will be paid $200 000 for 2 weeks of snapshots being posted wearing the sponsors clothes. The couple, Zac and Bo, have been together for 3 years and have a photographer, Lenny, with them always. While they're diving in Samoa, Zac proposes to Bo when they're underwater and Lenny isn't nearby. Afterwards, Lenny says they'll have to film the proposal because Zac and Bo's fans will be unhappy not to share in the moment. They have something like 9 million followers. We are then made aware that Bo is starting to want privacy and Zac doesn't get her point of view. Bo doesn't always want Lenny with them but it causes conflict with Zac. Meanwhile they keep posting beautiful pictures to keep their followers happy. Zac agrees to stage another "fake" proposal in Norway. When they get to Norway things don't go exactly as expected. They rent a "shelf farm" which is in the middle of nowhere with no hot water or indoor plumbing, in the middle of winter. They have a surly Norwegian called Anders reluctantly helping them because his grandmother rented to them without him knowing about it. It turns out that Bo also has a creepy stalker. In the background, we have Anders' grandmother's past history playing out. This story won't be for everyone, particularly for those with no interest in social media.
I really enjoyed the millennial outlook in this novel and how the other characters viewed the millennial approach that everything needs to be a brand...including your lifestyle. It painted an interesting picture of how many people choose to show only a certain part of their life and show it off as very glamorous when in reality no one is perfect or leading a perfect life. No matter where you are or who you are there will always be stress, sorrow, and heartbreak because that’s just the way the world works. As always Karen Swan’s books are beautifully written and well researched. I think I was snuggled under a blanket the whole time while reading this because the cold crisp air described really came to life. I loved this book much more so than last year’s The Christmas Secret because Bo, and even Zac were much more relatable especially as twenty something millennials. I also loved Signy’s storyline and would have loved more scenes with her in the present day, maybe also finding out what happened to her sister. I probably could have done without the whole murder storyline but I understand wanting to add a more complex layer to the characters.Hey Karen, how about your next Christmas book taking place in Lake Tahoe, California? I’ll definitely show you around the sights and my favorite spots! There’s nothing more I would love than reading a beautifully written novel set place in my favorite spot in the world.
Not great literature. Repetitive information re the pleasure and money seeking behaviors of the main character “Bo†and her boyfriend “Zacâ€. Again as in other books by this author, lots of descriptions of designer clothes. Before I was halfway through this book, I surmised who Bo’s “stalker†was. The ending was also predictable. As I had read other books by this author and enjoyed them, I was most disappointed with the superficial characters and the repetitiveness of their lifestyle in The Christmas Lights.
Another fabulous book by Karen Swan and another fabulous book based around the holidays!Swan takes you on an interesting ride in the Christmas Lights, one that is unexpected yet keeps you on your toes !
I didn't finish reading this book. I didn't like the way the story started--too gloomy and sad.
